There’s been a lot of negative press about very low calorie diets and what it can really do for weight loss.

If you’re looking to lose weight quickly, you want to pay close attention.

According to Wikipedia, a traditional very low calorie diet (VLCD) is a formulated, nutritionally complete, liquid meals which totals about 800 calories or less.

This type of program is generally recommended for people that are obese or close to it.

However, that does not mean that very low calorie diets are only for people extremely overweight.

In fact, you don’t have to go to a store to buy a formulated solution.

You have a number of options to lower your calories significantly to jump start your weight loss.

You could go on a juice blast for a few days taking in nothing but fresh juice from vegetables and fruits.

This is a very effective method to jump starting your program and seeing results quickly.

I’ve done a 5 day juice blast where I drank 4-5 juices a day for all 5 days.

The result?

I lost 7 pounds in just the first 5 days.

Another option is to go on a regular fast.

I’ve done a number of fasts to lower my calories significantly and to see results right away.

The longest I’ve ever done a fast for is 3 days.

The result?

I lost 4 pounds by eating nothing.

I will say that this is probably the most difficult option, but the benefits you get are not only weight loss.

You learn how to take control of your eating.

You learn what you can do without (food wise).

You begin to have a distaste for the foods that quickly pack on the fat on your body.

You don’t have to go on a 3 day or a 7 day or even a one day fast. Start off slow and skip breakfast for once. It’s not the most important meal of the day. In fact, you might find yourself with more energy throughout the day if you go without breakfast.

Then try skipping 2 meals and just having dinner, or vice versa.

Those 2 ways are great alternatives to a very low calorie diet.

You’re lowering your calories significantly with both options.

Very Low Calorie Diet – Time Period

With a very low calorie diet, I believe if you do it for an extended period of time, the benefits begin to disappear.

If you’re obese or extremely overweight, then going for an extended period of time (over 1 month) may be ok, but as always, check with your physician first.

If you just have a bit of fat (10-30 pounds or so) to lose, then a good 1-2 weeks on such low calories may be beneficial.

Very Low Calorie Diet – My Experiences

I’ve never went on a severely limited caloric intake for longer than a few weeks.

The chances of you losing much needed muscle mass is too great when you lower calories too low for too long.

I usually only go for about 1-2 weeks max., and then I slowly increase my calories to where I’m losing about a pound or 2 a week.

Weight loss is not just about calories in calories out. You can go on very low calories, but you’ll need to take other variables into consideration so you don’t lose too much muscle and have your metabolism come crashing down.

A very low calorie diet is a strategy that works, but if you’re concerned, be sure to check with a doctor before going on a VLCD.
